In 2016 and moving into 2017, one of the most popular career moves is affiliate marketing. As technology continues to improve, we are looking for more ways to earn money from home and becoming an affiliate seems to be the general theme of late.
What is an Affiliate? – If you were to become an affiliate, you would own your own website and attempt to refer all of your visitors to a third-party site where you would want them to make purchases. If you were signed up to a fitness affiliate program, you would try and get your visitors to go over to their site and buy products using your link. If a purchase is made, you would receive a percentage of this as commission. Using specific links or useful tracking tools, your commission can be calculated by viewing exactly which sales were made thanks to your website.
If you choose this route, you need to be careful as to who you choose to represent. Firstly, you need to choose a site that has staying power because you don’t want to put time and effort into creating a business with a company that will go bankrupt within six months. Also, you should research what the different programs offer. Whilst some companies offer products that one would buy once, other companies offer products that can be purchased often and this needs to be considered if you want to see longevity in your earnings. Also, popularity of items will play a role here too because you don’t want to choose a seasonal product.
Furthermore, you will probably want to choose an affiliate program that allows you to sell products within your niche. If you had a blog about fitness and you were trying to sell garden tools, you wouldn’t be able to utilise this as much as you would if you chose to go with fitness equipment or nutritional items.
Although this is often forgotten by first-time affiliates, you should also look into the tracking methods that are made available for partners. Whilst some companies choose to put cookies on computers, others prefer to hold a database with affiliate information together with a computer’s record and they will yield very different results. If you aren’t sure which one to go for, try and speak to someone who has used both to gather their thoughts.
Additionally, you might even want to test the product so that you ensure that you’re affiliated with a high-quality product. When your visitors buy something through your link, they are trusting your word so you need to make sure that the end product is good otherwise you will lose readership and a poor reputation will spread. Ultimately, it is much better to represent a high-quality product for less commission than a poor-quality product with high commission. When making this key decision, you have to think about long-term rewards as opposed to short-term gains.
Finally, it is important to note that you have to be clever with your advertising as opposed to just flat-out telling your readership that they should buy a product. If you do this once, you may get away with it but any more than that and visitors to your site will soon grow tired. Instead, you have to talk about the product and why people should buy it. If they genuinely believe that it will improve their lives, they will go ahead and make the purchase.
If you want to choose this type of online business, you have to be ready to work hard. Of course, you can work from your own home which is a bonus but you will have to put the hours in before you start to see the rewards. If you give it a half-hearted attempt, you will be outdone by all the other people that are doing the same as you but working harder!
